2014 Cadillac ELR won't receive a high-performance version like the CTS and the ATS, as stated by Mark Reuss earlier this week, but the brand is looking to "expand the tuning envelope" of the plug-in hybrid coupe.
As far as body styles are concerned though, there's no way Cadillac is
willing to expand. However, it seems that the 2014 ELR is next in line
to have its roof chopped off by Newport Convertible Engineering (NCE),
known for offering droptop versions for the Porsche Cayenne, the Acura TL and more than just a couple of other Cadillacs, including the DTS, CTS and the Escalade.
Newport Convertible Engineering says it will produce a limited number of
convertible 2014 ELR models with worldwide availability. Details are
limited at the moment, but NCE states that US owners can ship their
vehicles at the company's headquarter in California, while international
clients can have their EV modified at facilities located in Barcelona
(Spain) and Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
There's no word on pricing yet, but the 2014 ELR will make for an
expensive convertible with the stock model available from $75,000 before
any federal incentives. It will be interesting to see if Newport
Convertible Engineering finds a market for a ragtop ELR.
