This silver-painted 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra found a new home for
$825,000 (€596,141) during Auctions America’s recent sale event in Fort
Lauderdale, Florida.
Delivered to Downtown Ford in Los Angeles on November 28, 1962, this
Cobra is the 23rd production example that was built. Powered by a 289
cubic inch (4.7-liter) V8 engine, the vehicle had only one owner from
1971 until 2011 and was recently restored to original specifications.
Bolted on chassis CSX2023, the Cobra rides on AC logo knock-off hub
chrome wire wheels wrapped in Goodyear Power Cushion whitewall tires and
still sports its factory correct dual exhaust system. The vehicle is
fitted with four-wheel disc brakes, leather upholstered seats and comes
with a soft-top with side curtains.
Additionally, the Cobra still has a mechanical tach-drive off the back
of its Lucas generator, a Moto-Lita steering wheel and an original
Smiths clock. Auctions America sold the vehicle in “fantastic running
and driving order”, which means it will be manhandled by a very happy
owner from now on.
Production of the original Shelby Cobra began in 1962 and lasted until
1966, when Carroll Shelby rolled out the Super Snake. However,
continuation Cobra MkIIIs are still being built as we speak.
While the aforementioned Cobra is a little gem among early roadsters, an
auction event that’s scheduled to take place next month in Houston will
hammer a unique version of the car - a 1963 model fitted with the Dragonsnake package.
This specific dragster is the winningest competition Cobra in history and should cross the block for a seven digit figure.
