Sony has just announced that 7 million PS4s have been sold worldwide,
five months after the console’s release. The launch has already
shattered the notion that dedicated video game consoles are dead or
dying, and these numbers only continue to reinforce that.
Sony announced the sales milestone on their blog, along with
additional data saying that software sales have topped 20.5 million.
Over the past few weeks and months, Sony has always been quick to
announce when the PS4 has met each new sales marker, and we’ve heard
from them when the console breached 6 and 5 million sales as well.
In contrast, Microsoft MSFT has remained almost entirely mute about
Xbox One sales. The last official word we heard from them was that the
console has sold 3 million units, but that was back in early January.
All other numbers since then have been speculation, with nothing
official released from Microsoft.
