Many first-timers appear on the magazine’s annual list which is divided into the categories women, men, couples, originals and professionals.
Vanity Fair released its 2014 International Best-Dressed list on Wednesday, August 6. Unsurprisingly, some celebrities who make the list are winners from this year’s awards season as well as red-carpet favorites. Many names appear for the first time on the list. Lupita Nyong’o and Cate Blanchett, both Oscar-winning actresses, are among the honorees. It is the first appearance for Nyong’o on the annual list. The Brooklyn-based actress mentioned Audrey Hepburn as her style icon. Although she’s been praised for her sense of fashion, she said, “I dislike shopping.” It is Blanchett’s second appearance on the list. Her notable look this year was when she donned a black lace-and-tulle Giorgio Armani Privee gown at the Golden Globes. Some celebrities, including Emma Watson and Emmy Rossum who also make the list, mentioned Blanchett as their style icon. Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris is another first-timer on the list, along with actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Idris Elba. When asked about his favorite item of clothing, Harris told the magazine, “I spend a lot of time trying to track down wonderful underwear. Current favorite brand: N2N. Perfectly designed to honor the goods and not smash them.” Although the list is dominated by actors, it also includes European royals, sports stars and businessmen. Kate Middleton, fixture of the list for four years, is joined in the magazine’s best-dressed Hall of Fame by German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, the creative force behind Chanel. Princess Mary of Denmark, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands and actress Michelle Dockery were noted for their style. Other names who make the cut include New York Giant athlete Victor Cruz, Nasty Gal CEO Sophia Amoruso, and Grammy-winning musician Pharrell Williams who is on the list for the second time. The full list will be published in the September issue of the magazine, which will be on sale on August 12.
