Ever since her debut into Hollywood, Lupita has been at the very center of a mini-war between Kenya and Mexico. With the rise of her career and with each award and nomination that she has bagged, the beef between the two countries has only been further fuelled as both of them claim the star as their own.
After her Oscar win, the entertainment pages of both countries exploded and the competition over her nationality became even more fiery. The ’12 Years a Slave’ actress was born in Mexico to parents of Kenyan origin and although she lived in Kenya, her parents sent her back to Mexico when she was 16 Years so that she could learn Spanish and that is where the big question of who really owns her stems from.Well, yesterday the actress finally put an end to all the beef and declared her nationality. According to El Mañana, this is what she said,
“I’m Mexican and Kenyan at the same time,” she said, according to El Mañana. “I’ve seen the quarrels over my nationality, but I’m Kenyan and Mexican at the same time. So again, I am Mexican-Kenyan and I am fascinated by carne asada tacos.”
El Mañanalos reports that when asked what part of her award belonged to Mexico, the actress answered that,
“This award belongs to me”
